How To File A Copyright

Copyright law protects original works of authoriship. Your ideas as they are expressed in tangible form. If you have a book, song, peom, artistic work, photography or any other "creative work" you can use copyright filing to protect it!

If your idea is infringed, you cannot file a lawsuit without a copyright application or registration. Of course, you own a work as soon as it is "created." However, you only have five years from the date that you first make it public to file to obtain a copyright registration. Many people never both to copyright their photos, websites, logos or other works and after five years, these are virtually "public domain." You can still claim to "own the copyright" of your work, but if you have passed the five year statute of limitations, it bars you from registration, and without a registraiton you can't sue an infringer.
